Thank you for taking the time to chat to us, Tasha! What inspired you to become a hairdresser?
I’ve always loved hair, always loved being around people and making people feel their best. So, I put them all together and have my dream job!
How did you begin your career and get into the industry?
I used my weekends to visit the best salons in my area, and would go in and introduce myself, and tell them I wanted to be their apprentice! I was picky with which salons I applied for and aimed for the best salons around. I was lucky enough to do my apprenticeship at a well-known salon, and worked my absolute butt off to be the best hairdresser I could be!
What is the best part about your job?
Two things, firstly- my clients! I have the best clients around. Some have been with me since my first year, and still come to me every 5-6 weeks! They become your friends and you create such an amazing relationship/friendship. I have met some of the most amazing people, I have a belief that ‘you meet people when you’re supposed to, and people come into your life at just the right time’. I’ve definitely had those people!
Secondly – my Hair & Harlow girls! They are my family and best friends! Amy (Co-owner of Hair & Harlow) and I have worked together for 11 and a half years, she was my very first senior when I was an apprentice! Having friendships like these, and getting to work with some of your best friends every day, is pretty special!
What’s been your career highlight in hairdressing?
Definitely working at New York Fashion Week. Something I’ll never forget! It was always on my wish list, but it seemed so farfetched. But, I put my bum down and worked really hard and was lucky enough to be given an opportunity to go.
What is the best piece of advice you have received during your journey of being salon manager?
My dad once said to me, ‘never ask the staff to do things that you’re not willing to do yourself’!
What’s your most common hair request from clients at Hair & Harlow?
Blonde! We are definitely known for our blondes, and most of our clients are always searching for the perfect, but also healthy blonde.
What is the most common hair struggle your clients come into your salon with?
I feel our clientele are really well educated now about their hair but also about haircare in general. All of our clients are educated about the best products to use at home. We do get the new clients that visit us with tired, over coloured and damaged hair, and they don’t understand why their hair is the way it is! Hair education is the key!
What do you think is the biggest mistake clients are making with their hair / haircare routine?
Over use of hot tools and the wrong haircare products! Less is more, sometimes a few pieces of hair waved, or just the front section is enough to create the perfect ‘undone beach wave’ look. Never under estimate the importance of a salon quality shampoo and conditioner.
